District 5930 Rotarians:
Rotary International's Board of Directors convened shortly before the RI Convention started to discuss concerns raised regarding the new gun policy. In response to the  comments and letters that many of us sent to the RI Board of Directors, RI has now provided a formal clarification to the policy. Specifically:
  • The policy allows clubs and districts to hold gun raffles and sponsor gun shows, as long as no club or district ever takes ownership of the weapons and all transfers of firearms are conducted by licensed third parties.
  • The policy does not prohibit sponsorship by companies that manufacture or sell guns.
  • The policy stipulates that Rotary Marks may not be shown along with images of guns or other weapons. It would not prohibit the incidental appearance of a gun or weapon, for example, in a photo of a police officer being honored at a club function.
In the coming days, RI Director Jorge Aufranc will be contacting all who communicated with the the Secretariat on this matter. If questions or concerns remain, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or to RI via the Director of Member Support, laurie.mccarthy@rotary.org.
As DG, I would like to personally express appreciation to all of the members of our District who reached out to me to provide comments, express concerns, or ask questions about this policy. It is clear that, above all else, the Four-Way Test was at the forefront of your minds and I believe that this is one of the key reasons that our voices were heard.
Yours in Rotary,
