January Newsletter:

Happy New Year!!

We begin a new calendar year this month and half of this Rotary Year is gone.  We have much to accomplish in the next 6 months and I know that all of you are busy with accomplishing your club goals and working on your fundraisers.

I know of three fundraisers this month...Southside Corpus Christi is holding their Service Above Self Awards Fundraising Dinner on Thursday, January 21.  The Corpus Christi Evening Club is holding their Mardi Gras Casino Night on Saturday, January 30 and the Valley is sponsoring the Vipers Basketball game to End Polio Now also on Saturday, January 30.  These are only a few of the events that are happening.  Please support your club and other Rotary Clubs as you can with their fundraising projects so we can accomplish great things together.

Some upcoming events that need to be on your radar.  The Rotary Foundation Dinner will be held on Saturday, February 20 at the Doubletree Hotel in McAllen.  Tickets are $40 per person, social hour at 6 pm and dinner at 7 pm.  We will be honoring Dr. Shirley Reed for her service as the Founding President of South Texas College.

If you are a President Elect or President Nominee of your Club, you need to register for Lonestar PETS .  This is scheduled for Feb. 25-28 in Dallas at the DFW Hyatt.  Hotel rooms are going fast so you need to make your reservations ASAP.  This is a great training opportunity.  What is offered at PETS cannot be gotten by taking an online course which several of our PE's would like to do.  This is about inspiration, motivation and networking with the Rotary International and District Leadership, as well as your fellow President Elects.

I recently received a letter from RI President Ravi announcing that His Holiness Pope Francis will officiate at a Mass to Celebrate the Jubilee of Rotarians at St. Peter's Square in Rome on April 30.  RI will have 8,000 seats reserved for Rotarians, friends and family.  For more information, please visit the Jubilee of Rotarians website.  Registration opens on January 18.

Finally, I am looking for a good Rotarian to be District Governor for Rotary Year 2018-2019.  I sent an email out to the District regarding this matter.  You may not qualify or be interested but you might know of someone who would qualify and want to be a Gift to District 5930 through Service Above Self as District Governor.  Check the District Website for further information.

Thank you for all that you do for Rotary and the Gifts you Give to the World.

DG Betty

This year RYLA will be held February 5-7, 2016.

The Rotary Club of Corpus Christi organizes and hosts the RYLA program for the District 5930 Rotary Clubs. RYLA Camp has multiple levels of leadership training.  First year attendees are “Campers”.  This level is open to high school sophomores and juniors.  The Rotary Clubs from throughout the South Texas area award full scholarships to selected students sponsored from their area high schools. See your school counselor or contact your local Rotary Club for sponsorship possibilities.  These clubs pay the $250 tuition for each camper they sponsor as part of their commitment to the development of youth in their communities.

Campers who demonstrate aptitude for leadership within the RYLA program can be considered to return the next year’s RYLA as “Trailblazers.” During the Trailblazer year, participants continue their leadership and personal development as well as having leadership and facilitation roles during RYLA Camp. This is a new level of leadership development for RYLA started in 2015.  Trailblazers will attend an expanded RYLA Camp, February 4-7, 2016, with a full day and ½ of training. Trailblazers are generally junior and seniors in high school. Currently each Trailblazer is responsible for their tuition of $200 which covers lodging, food, and supplies for the 4-day leadership camp.

Junior and Senior Counselors for RYLA are selected from previous year counselors and those Trailblazers who demonstrate interest and aptitude to be a leader and mentor for campers. A team of one Senior Counselor and one Junior Counselor co-lead each group of 12-15 campers as they progress through their leadership training activities and projects. Counselor tuition for the 4-day RYLA Camp is covered by the RYLA program making this extended leadership training free to the counselors.

Rotary Club members can personally sponsor their children, grandchildren or worthy students to RYLA. The student must meet all requirements being a high school sophomore or junior and showing leadership skills to be further developed; pay $250 per student with complete applications and payment to be received by 12/19/15, or applicable late fees will apply. All forms/applications are on website at www.rotarycc.com or contact Jim Villaume at 361-688-11987.
