Foundation Awards Lunch for RY 2015-2016
The Foundation Lunch is from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. The keynote speaker will be Amanda Lewis, Global Scholar.
Growing up on her parents' sugar cane plantation near Ciudad Valles, Mexico, Amanda Lewis became interested at a young age in plants and what they could do for people and communities.
"I would like to return to the area of Mexico where we have our land and help people learn to grow crops that are more profitable than sugar cane, and teach them more effective methods of growing plants," she said.
Lewis, who graduated from Texas A&M University-Kingsville with a degree in agriculture in 2014, has been awarded $70,000 in scholarships from Rotary International with the Kingsville Rotary Club as her sponsor. She is pursuing a master's degree in plant science at the one of the highest-rated universities in the world in her field, Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
"I didn't think I could get in, much less afford to go," Lewis said. "But Rotary made that possible."
Kingsville Rotarian Mark Walsh said that he is impressed by Lewis' international background and her desire to help solve problems of hunger and food supply.
"She is an amazing young woman," Walsh said. Walsh met Lewis when she addressed the Kingsville Rotary Jan. 5.
Richard Hartwig, International Program Director for the Kingsville Rotary Club and professor of political science at A&M-Kingsville, said Lewis has an outstanding service ethic as well.
"She is the first person from Kingsville to get one of these global grants," he said. "What she is working on is super important when you think of the need for food supply."
Lewis, 32, is studying innovative methods of raising crops, such as growing plants in water and vertical gardening.
The awards portion of the lunch program will include recognition of the following:
- Top Clubs in the District in Per Capita Giving
- Clubs in the District with 100% EREY members
- Clubs in the District with 100% Sustaining Members
All District Wide Rotary Foundation Training: Grants Management Training
With the start of Future Vision grant model a few years ago, there were new requirements for the clubs to meet in order to be certified to apply for a grant. At least two members (one of the two is the Club President for 2017-2018) from a club must be trained and certified for the club to be able to submit a District Grant. Certification and training is only good for one year. Even though you may have been trained and certified previously, you need to attend this year if you plan on submitting a grant for 2017-2018. Ellison Crider, Rotary Foundation District Chair, and Eddie Bartnesky, DDF Grants Chair will facilitate the training sessions; sharing new highlights and modifications to the process and certifying clubs and members.
