MCALLEN, TEXAS July 16, 2019 - South Texas College, in collaboration with Rotary District 5930, is hosting an exhibit entitled “Rotary Art Olympiad” displaying student art work from India.
This exhibit will run all summer in the Rainbow Room at the STC Pecan Campus Library, and will be celebrated with a public reception on Tuesday, July 16, from 5-6 p.m.
“Rotary International’s theme for 2019-2020 is Rotary Connects the World and this exhibit provides an example of just how closely connected we all are. Students from Edinburg had their posters displayed in India in March 2019, and now we have student art from India reciprocated,” said Dr. Elaine Hernandez, the Rotary District International Service Chair and Regional Director of the Texas Hunger Initiative.

The reception will include a presentation of “Rotary Certificates of Merit” awarded to the students from IDEA Quest Academy in Edinburg who produced the 10 photovoice posters addressing hunger in the Rio Grande Valley. These posters were developed by the students as part of their membership in the South Texas Ideas Club, and in partnership with Baylor University Texas Hunger Initiative under a grant from the University of Kentucky. These photovoice posters have been displayed at the RGV Equal Voice Network Health and Hunger Summit in Edinburg, the National Hunger and Poverty Summit at Baylor University in Waco, at a USDA-sponsored meeting in Washington, DC, and at the Rotary District Conference in Brownsville.“The photovoice posters provided an opportunity for students to explore complex social issues like poverty and hunger and express their voice in addressing food insecurity in our border region,” Hernandez added.
The community is invited to view this exhibit and to help celebrate the students from Edinburg who were recognized by Rotarians in India.
