Rotary International October Theme: Community Economic Development in South Texas
Dear Fellow Rotarian,

October marks Rotary International's focus on Community Economic Development, a theme that resonates deeply with the unique challenges and opportunities facing South Texas. This border region, stretching from the Rio Grande Valley to the Coastal Bend, has long been characterized by its entrepreneurial spirit, rich cultural heritage, and resilient communities. Rotary clubs throughout South Texas are embracing this month's theme by supporting initiatives that create sustainable economic growth—from microfinance programs that help small business owners in Brownsville and McAllen access capital, to workforce development partnerships with local community colleges that equip residents with marketable skills.

These efforts address the region's particular needs, including higher-than-average unemployment rates in some areas and the economic integration of border communities that serve as vital trade corridors between the United States and Mexico.

South Texas Rotarians understand that true community economic development goes beyond charity—it's about creating pathways to self-sufficiency and prosperity. Local clubs partner with organizations to support agricultural innovation in the Valley, promote tourism along the Gulf Coast, and mentor young entrepreneurs in cities like Corpus Christi, Laredo, and the rapidly growing communities along the I-35 corridor. By investing in financial literacy programs, supporting local chambers of commerce, and connecting business leaders across international borders, Rotary clubs in the region embody the organization's commitment to "Service Above Self" while addressing their communities' economic realities.

This October, as Rotarians worldwide focus on economic development, South Texas stands as a powerful example of how local action can transform regional economies and improve lives for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Jack Alspaugh

District Governor 2026-27
