Empowering Futures Through Literacy
Dear Fellow Rotarian,

As we recognize Basic Education and Literacy Month this September, let's take a moment to reflect on what education means right here along the Lower Gulf Coast. From the Rio Grande Valley to Corpus Christi, up through Victoria, and across the coastal communities in between, we know that our strength lies in our people’s hardworking families, vibrant cultures, and tight-knit neighborhoods where everyone looks out for one another. Yet too many of our neighbors still struggle with basic reading and writing skills, making it harder to land good jobs, support their children's education, or fully participate in the community we all share. For those of us building careers and raising families here, we understand that literacy isn't just about books; it's about opportunity, dignity, and keeping the Gulf Coast spirit thriving for the next generation.

This is where we roll up our sleeves and get to work—because that's what we do down here. Whether it's volunteering with local schools in Victoria, supporting ESL programs that serve our diverse Valley communities, mentoring a young reader in Corpus Christi, or contributing to Rotary grants that expand educational access across our district, every effort makes a difference. Our region's future depends on ensuring that everyone—regardless of background—has the tools to succeed. This September, let's come together as Rotarians and neighbors to champion literacy in South Texas. When we invest in education, we invest in the heart of the Gulf Coast, and that's something worth fighting for.

Sincerely,

Jack Alspaugh

District Governor 2026-27
