December 2023
District Governor's Message

Dear Rotary District 5930 Rotarians,
I have visited 33 clubs out of 50 in our district. I am slowly inching my way to the north & coastal regions.  Regretfully, I had to cancel club visits with Northwest Corpus Christi and Rockport.  My sincere apologies to the clubs and Assistant Governors Dan Korus and Meg Reese.  I am dealing with an eyesight health issue that hopefully will be resolved soon.

So far, my club visits have given me a unique opportunity to meet many Rotarians.  It is great to be surrounded with people that have love in their hearts for humanity and amazing to see the beautiful bond that we share together!  Hope to get back on schedule.

December 2023 is Rotary Disease Prevention and Treatment
Help us stop the spread of life-threatening diseases around the world like polio, HIV/AIDS, and malaria.
Rotary believes good health care is everyone’s right. Our members combat diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and polio. Prevention is important, which is why we also focus on health education and bringing people routine hearing, vision, and dental care.
We set up temporary clinics, blood donation centers, and training facilities in underserved communities struggling with outbreaks and health care access. We design and build infrastructure that allows doctors, patients, and governments to work together.

Rotary makes amazing things happen, like:
  • Providing more than 80 percent of Ghana’s people with clean water to fight Guinea worm disease.
  • Helping Liberian women get tested for HIV early in their pregnancies, reducing new HIV infections in children by 95 percent over two years.
  • Rotary's efforts have not only ended polio in 122 countries but also created a system for tackling myriad other health priorities, such as Ebola.
How it works
There are endless occasions to raise funds and to donate: personal events, athletic challenges, good resolutions, extraordinary ideas, etc.

1. Choose your occasion
From birthdays to weddings, from climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro to celebrating your new pilot's license, there's no limit to how your pursuits, celebrations or tributes can transform more lives through The Rotary Foundation.
2. Choose what you want to support
Your fundraiser can help us end polio, respond to disasters, fight disease, strengthen peace efforts, provide clean water, support education, and more.
3. Inspire your community
Share your fundraiser with friends, colleagues, neighbors, family. Don't be shy! Turn your network into Foundation supporters. Collect donations, and update everyone on your progress!
News in the area of Club/Membership Development:
Past District Governor Andy Hagan presented the EarlyAct program to the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) Board of Directors and was instrumental in coordinating the implementation of the program.

BISD Board members met earlier this week & unanimously voted to approve the EarlyAct First Knight (EAFK) initiative sponsored by the Rotary Club of Brownsville Sunrise to be introduced at Garden Park Elementary school in January 2024.
This will be the first time that EAFK will be introduced in the BISD at Garden Park Elementary school and moreover the first elementary school to benefit from the EAFK program in the Rio Grande Valley!
A special thanks to the Rotary Club of Brownsville Sunrise, the BISD board, and Mr. Cesar Murillo, the Garden Park Elementary School principal along with hi teachers, faculty & staff for supporting this wonderful character building, leadership development opportunity, and social emotional learning curriculum for its students.

Let’s continue to develop and create vibrant clubs to Create Hope in the World with Passion and Compassion.

Respectfully yours,

Luis Cavazos
Rotary District Governor
2023-2024

Rotary's top priority is the eradication of polio, but our members take on far greater responsibilities to fight disease. They set up health camps and training facilities in undeveloped countries and communities struggling with HIV/AIDS and malaria. They also design and build the infrastructure for doctors, nurses, governments, and partners to reach the one in six people in the world who can't afford to pay for healthcare. This is one of the Foundations Areas of Focus and one in which many of us would be aware of the numerous projects around the world supported by clubs and the Foundation. Look at your role in promoting improved health at home and abroad and supporting these vital programs that contribute not only to healthy communities but also peaceful communities.

People of Action helps define Rotary for those who don’t know us. We’re professional, community, and civic leaders who connect with each other and who share a unique perspective and passion for taking action to improve the world. Describing and showing ourselves as people of action creates a personal connection to Rotary and emphasizes the impact we make in our communities.
