May is New Generation Month
 
Youth Service Month, Rotary clubs of the world give special emphasis to the many Rotary-sponsored programs which serve children and young people.
 
Our “Magic of Rotary” District Conference was a Huge Success.  We had 7 Rotary International Districts represented.  Team from India District 3000 as a Friendship Exchange visited our District.
Our Special Invited Guest Dr. Sylvia Whitlock – 1st Female Club President in Rotary International enlightened us with such a personal insight of her challenges to become a Rotarian.  Our Rotary International President’s Representative Johrita Solari also the 1st Female on the West Coast to become the Rotary International Director 2019-2021 Zone 25/26 and her husband Bruce presented District 5930 with a donation of $7500 for our District Hurricane Harvey Relief FUND.  They belong to a Rotary International Scuba Diving Fellowship and members raise funds for International Humanitarian Projects.  Hurricane Harvey Relief FUND is the first to receive a donation from this group in the United States.
 
Our Annual Student 4 Way Test Speech Competition was a Huge Success.  This is always a Highlight of our Rotary Year in being able to award High School Students Scholarships to continue their education.
Education, one of our 6 Areas of Focus is an important factor in educating our communities to empower them to succeed.

The Winner of our District 5930 Rotarian 4 Way Test Speech Competition was Dan Worthington, Club President of McAllen South Rotary Club. Special Events Chair, Cat Dickerson of The Laredo Rotary Club facilitated this Event on February 24, 2018 in Mission.
 
And as we were having our District Conference at the South Padre Island Convention Center, on the other side of the island, the Youth Peace Conference was underway at Schlitterbahn Water Park. 
 
Chairs Mike Dickerson and Kathy Preddy had over 80 students participating in a “Beach Walk” Polio Awareness, Team Building Exercises, a Passport that required the District Governor’s autograph, a Special Presentation from District 5930 Global Grant Scholar Amanda Lewis that received her Master’s Degree from the Netherlands.  After their lunch, they enjoyed a Waterpark Pass.

For this Rotary Year 2017-2018, only ONE Goal – To Help and Support our Clubs in District 5930. We are on our last 2 months of Rotary Year 2017-2018 and we need to FINISH STRONG!  Our Lt. Governors, Assistant Governors, District Leadership Team are standing by to assist in any way possible.  Please update your Club’s Goal Center on Rotary Club Central, update your volunteer hours, your Club projects, your Foundation goals, submit your contributions to The Rotary Foundation to get your Paul Harris Fellow recognition points to award and get them in on time for your Club Installations.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
Our END POLIO NOW Campaign has been very successful this Rotary Year 2017-2018.  A total of over $9000 has been raised this year and our Match Challenge 3 to 1 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will turn this into $27000!   Rotarian from Houston Memorial Spring Branch Rotary Rogelio Martinez donated a motorcycle for our District to raffle.  The Winner, Roy Garza from Laredo was announced at the District Conference. 
 
District Rotary Foundation Chair Ellison Crider is ready to answer any questions and direct you in whatever help you need.  Past District Governor Maxie Houser will be stepping in for Rotary Years 2018-2019-2020.   Send your Club’s contributions NOW!!! 
 
ROTARY AWARENESS/PUBLIC IMAGE
Lt. Governor Aleda Reyes has been busy promoting the Rotary brand and has done an Excellent job.
She will be presenting at our District Assembly in Robstown on Saturday May 5th.   Please register online for the District Assembly to train your Team.
 
Update on Hurricane Harvey Relief FUND – we have awarded 50 Grant Requests and have more in the pipeline for a Woman’s Shelter and High School Education Skills Training in Ingleside.  A displaced family from Rockport was discovered last week in McAllen with the dad enrolling in a skills training education certificate.  These grants are in process.
